What is 'How Heavy is a City?'

'How Heavy is a City?' is the 7th edition of the Lisbon Triennale. From October to December 2025, the programme includes three exhibitions, a three-day conference series, a selection of Independent Projects, and a publication.

What is the Lisbon Triennale?

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale, founded in 2007, is an open platform for the research and promotion of architectural thinking and practice. In addition to the international forum organised every three years, the association produces regular public events, such as Open House Lisboa, talk series, conferences and exhibitions.

Who is curating this edition?

The 7th edition is curated by Territorial Agency (Ann-Sofi Rönnskog and John Palmesino).

What are the highlights of the 7th edition?

'How Heavy is a City?' runs from 02 October to 08 December 2025 and features three main exhibitions: Fluxes (MAAT – Central Tejo), Spectres (MUDE – Design Museum), and Lighter (Architecture Centre – MAC/CCB), and twenty Independents Projects across the city, including at the Lisbon Triennale cultural centre: Palácio Sinel de Cordes, and at MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art.

  • Talk, Talk, Talk conference series: 29—31 October

  • Educational actitivies take place over the weekend of 18 and 19 October.

Where does 'How heavy is a city?' happen?

This edition takes place across several venues in Lisbon, including:

  • MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology

  • MAC/CCB – Contemporary Art Museum at the Belém Cultural Centre

  • MUDE – Design Museum

  • Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation

  • MNAC – National Museum of Contemporary Art

  • Palácio Sinel de Cordes – Lisbon Triennale cultural centre

What is presented at Palácio Sinel de Cordes, the Triennale’s cultural centre?

The Palace hosts the collective exhibition integrating Independent Projects installations, talks, and workshops. All events at Palácio Sinel de Cordes are free admission.

How to get to the venues?

Palácio Sinel de Cordes (Lisbon Triennale cultural centre)
• The 734 bus departs from Martim Moniz Square or Santa Apolónia station. 
• Santa Apolónia metro station.
•  28E tram trip and a 4 minutes walk.
• On Tuesdays and Saturdays a flea market takes place in the area which limits cars and bus access.

MAAT – Central Tejo
• Train trip from Cais do Sodré to Belém station takes 7 minutes.
• Tram 15E or buses (714, 728) are more frequent but take about 20-30 minutes.

MAC/CCB
• Same as MAAT but needs an extra 10 min walk.
• Plan to visit both MAAT and CCB on the same day. They are located away from the city centre.

MUDE – Design Museum
• Metro stations Terreiro do Paço, Baixa-Chiado ou Rossio.
• Buses 711, 728, 732 e 759 (Praça do Comércio), 736 (Rossio).

MNAC
• Metro Station Baixa-Chiado.

Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation 
• Metro stations São Sebastião or Praça de Espanha.

Where can I get tickets to an exhibition or any other event?

All the events during the opening days have free admission. For the main exhibitions programme, tickets can be purchased at the respective venues.
