The average sea level has varied little more than 10cm for the three millennia prior to industrialisation. Today, we are currently experiencing the early stages of a new inundation, with sea levels projected to rise by over 2m in the coming century. The first metre of this rise will occur in the twenty-first century at accelerating rates, covering extensive land. The locked-in energy in the Earth System, primarily due to the of burning fossil fuels, is already causing sea levels to rise at alarming levels. Rising sea levels are impacting low-lying areas where over 1 billion people currently live, causing far-reaching consequences for the entire supply system of the technosphere that sustains the whole of humanity.
