Today the echo of Buckminster Fuller’s witty question indicates that for each building, there is an equivalent mass in the form of emissions of greenhouse gases. This shift on the understanding of materiality indicates also a shift in the design and engineering practices, where lifespans, half lives and relationships between individual and collective actions are becoming a major factor.
Ha/f
Ha/f is a team of architects and building scientists who partner with designers, builders, and government organizations to reduce emissions in the built environment.
Kelly Alvarez Doran, OAA - Kelly, an architect, educator, and father, and co-founder of Ha/f. His focus on holistic, regenerative design process is shaped his experiences working across Africa and North America. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto, Senior Fellow of Architecture 2030, founding member of the Bio-based Materials Collective.
Ryan Bruer, OAA - Ryan is an architect and artist passionate about the communal stories that connect people to materials and city-building. As co-founder and partner Ha/f, he has advanced life cycle assessment across Canada to drive immediate carbon reduction in construction. He leads the Ha/f Research Seminar at the University of Waterloo’s School of Architecture.
Make Good Projects
Kurtis Chen - Chen, a multidisciplinary designer and Juno-winning filmmaker, bridges architecture, film, and advertising. He co-founded Make Good Projects and serves his community through leadership roles at the Toronto Society of Architects.
